Jumping into the Water: Stop Bush's Destruction of Our Country

After reading many wonderful blogs, I've decided to venture into this world of ether and thought. I am not a journalist. I do not claim brilliance or absolute knowledge. I only want to be heard. So, here goes....my first blog.

Bush and his cronies deny the reality of global warming for their own benefits, at the expense of our survival.

I urge you to write your elected officials to: 1) oppose drilling at the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and permanently protect this area through legislation, 2) propose that the U.S. ratify the Kyoto Protocol (and I ask you to go to www.kyotoandbeyond.org to sign the People's Ratification of the Kyoto Protocol), 3) propose development of renewable alternative fuel sources, and 4) recommend that oil companies be required to use a significant percentage of their recent record-breaking profits, gleaned from gouging American citizens, to develop these alternative fuel sources.

Stop proposed drilling of ANWR by legislating permanent protection
To support my first position, I’d like to remind you of the Exxon Valdez disaster as well as the disastrous oil spill resulting from the pipeline being shot in 2001 (and not for the first time, which proves pipeline security is also an issue - and they want to ship nuclear waste to Nevada?). The United States government, itself, has already proven that drilling for Alaskan oil ruins both land and water, and destroys life within both areas. In drilling at the ANWR, we would continue to endanger far too many species of plant and animal life, both terrestrial and aquatic. Oil companies tell us (like we'd believe them) that modern drilling is not as harmful to the environment as it used to be. It will harm migration routes and the animals and plants endemic to this region. Oil companies do NOT run our country, nor should they be allowed to determine its policies. Our elected officials are required to vote for what is best for the country, its people, and our long-term survival. Drilling at the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is obviously anathema to this concept.

Ratify the Kyoto Protocol
I also urge you to support and ratify the Kyoto Protocol. I once worked at a major government climate research facility. I worked with some of the top climatologists on our planet and went to conferences that included scientists from both developed and undeveloped countries around the globe. I listened to the discussions of the socioeconomic problems faced by the peoples of the developing countries. I heard their arguments, stating their need to cut down their rainforests to increase the economic development of their countries. They needed to utilize timber and mineral resources, arable land for farming, land for housing their increasing populations, and for building a transportation infrastructure to support all this growth, just as we once did. Despite all of these desperate needs, I see that these same countries have signed the Kyoto Protocol.

Is Bush in denial or is it simply religious arrogance?
Our President simply refuses to acknowledge the enormous amounts of evidence that the temperature of our planet is increasing. I can assure you that the research of our own scientists was NOT "polluted" by lobbyists, political benefactors or contributors. They are not interested in the politics of this, just in the truth found in good, solid scientific research. I remember when, in the 1980's, scientists testified in front of a Congressional Subcommittee stating that Global Warming is happening now. In the past 20 years since this testimony, the world has been inundated with additional evidence from scientists around the world to prove this point. In fact, the unprecedented melting of glaciers and polar ice, both the final sources of fresh water on this planet, are the "canaries" for this planet. The canaries are dying.

Bush is failing accountancy (and accountability)
Yet, President Bush STILL denies that global warming exists. He and other government representatives seem to believe that we can overdraw our account with the planet we live on, just as they overdraw our own country’s budget (by trillions of dollars). They operate on the false assumption that more unpolluted resources can be deposited back into our account. The President and those public officials are operating on a clear deficit of logic! We live in a closed biological system. Nothing can ever bring back the vast areas of clean air, water and land of our ancestors. I am not naive; I know that nothing in politics is cut and dry. However, this issue is really a no-brainer, when you remove political contributions, favors, and lobbies from the equation. The decision we must make as a species (not simply just as Americans) is whether or not we want to survive. If we do, our socioeconomic and political policies need to be aligned with that position. It is that simple. Instead of looking for huge profits and increased bank accounts, we need to work together to fight for our survival as a species! Please support ratification of the Kyoto Protocol!

The oil companies should be held accountable for price-gouging
My third and fourth propositions simply follow this line of reasoning. We need to produce renewable, alternative sources of energy. For the past few years, our leaders, especially President Bush, have allowed the oil companies to gouge Americans at the gas pumps. At the same time, the oil companies have lined their pockets with record-breaking profits. The oil companies should be required by Congress (as a penalty) to place a large percentage of these profits into the research and development of alternative fuels. Of course, our country also needs to fund independent research and development of these renewable, alternative fuels.

A call to make yourself heard: write and vote for your survival
As you well know, our elected officials are supposed to serve their constituants, the citizens of our country. Please become active and write your representatives. Show your approval of their votes in Congress by voting for those officials that support our survival and outing those that don't. Our future, literally as a species, depends on what you do now! I know this requires a major shift in our paradigm and, although difficult, this is our only path to survival.
